How Your Diet Affects Your Teeth

It’s pretty common knowledge that eating hard candies is not great for your teeth. Even if you think you have healthy eating habits, certain foods may be staining your teeth and causing damage like cavities. When you eat acidic food or eat food that can be converted to bacteria, you may be putting your oral health at risk. Acid erosion affects enamel and can wear down teeth. The teeth affected may rot or get cavities and these can be painful to deal with and difficult to fix. 

 It is important that you stay away from consuming lots of sugary drinks. Soda is not the only culprit. Some juices are acidic and should be drunk very quickly if at all. You may want to cut down your intake of alcoholic drinks also, since they can also cause your teeth to stain. Drinks like tea and coffee tend to stain your teeth noticeably. Starches are also not great for your teeth but it is okay to eat them occasionally.

If you absolutely have to snack, make sure that you do it at one time so that you can brush or rinse afterward. Instead of having a box of chocolates where you grab one every now and then, you may want to consider a tasty dessert at lunch. Fruit is a good choice in, but you should opt for fresh instead of dry fruit whenever possible. You will chew more on fresh fruit which will cause more saliva to be produced. This protects your mouth against harmful acidic food and makes it easier to wash it out. You may also want to go for sugarless gum instead of the fruity variety. This helps you keep sugar from staying in your mouth.

It is very important that you brush and floss at least twice a day, but it is also very important that you take care of what goes in your mouth throughout the day since it makes a big difference to your oral and overall health in general.
